Iceland

2023.

Before my college graduation, I had the wonderful opportunity to travel to Iceland to report on issues relating to the environment — economically, socially, and politically.

I interviewed locals to gain a deeper understanding on the many policies that govern their country.

The challenges I came across helped build a solid foundation as I began my professional career following my education at Boston University.

With a leap of faith and an open mind, I integrated my environmental research background with my ever-growing curiosity to organize my findings with other interns through the form of an educational publication for those interested on the topic. It is available for purchase here.

FAQs

  • Several months total. The internship was divided into phases:

Phase 1, Phase 2, and Phase 3 and lasted from May until the end of September.

  • Interns were given specific research objectives tailored to their interests and knowledge — my objectives related to Iceland’s sustainability efforts and policies.

I reviewed government documents (accessible to the public) which allowed me to understand Iceland's policies and practices more clearly. This prepared me for Phase 2 and ultimately Phase 3 since I kept track of data and other various spreadsheets applicable to my discoveries.

  • In Phase 2, I collaborated with the rest of my team in Iceland.

Every day was different. We generally followed a similar structure that consisted of early mornings, long drives, and even longer hikes. I had the privilege to tour and work with local power plants in Iceland’s protected areas.

This phase was the only one that was not remote-friendly. Whether it was speaking to locals at the top of a mountain, exploring hidden hiking trails — so secret that even locals were surprised to hear about them!

But mostly, lots of hands on learning. This phase was the most challenging — and most rewarding too.

  • Interns were required to organize our data from Phase 2 and complete our respective chapter as part of the publication.

We worked alongside editors and other team members to ensure that each chapter adhered to the stylebook and was an accurate representation of our discoveries.
